QR codes are 2D barcodes that can be scanned using a smartphone’s camera. QR codes are superior to one-dimensional barcodes, because they can contain more data and can still be read even if 30% of the code is unreadable. 

Typical Use of QR Codes: Ineffective for CPG Brands

In most situations, a single QR code is printed onto the outside of a product’s packaging, where anyone can scan that code. With this approach, QR codes link to a variety of static content, including webpages, forms, ingredient list, social media accounts, videos,  mobile apps and loyalty programs

Limitations of Current Approach

QR codes in this form are valuable for specific situations, but pose several limitations for brands wanting to take full advantage of QR technology:

a. Scan Once – because the QR content is static, there is no reason for a consumer to interact with it more than once

b. External QR Code – QR codes are typically printed on the outside packaging, meaning there is no verification of actual purchase or consumption when the code is scanned

c. Universal QR Code – QR codes are not individualized for each product unit, therefore brands cannot pass product-specific information to consumers. There is no way to track products moving through the supply chain

d. Data Collection –Because proof of purchase and consumption are not verifiable under this approach, the data collected is of limited value
